It is sort of rude of me not to summarize, and so many people keep
mailing me with the correct answer!
My freshly installed box wasn't resolving DNS queries, except for
nslookup queries. There are two ways about this:
1. Use the GUI bind configuration and setup the client,
2. ensure that /etc/svc.conf has an entry that contains bind.
