ORIGINAL QUESTION
Is there a table which might list what the oldest version of the OS that
can run on a specific platform.? If, for example i needed to run a specific
version of the OS, say 4.0f, what kind of hardware could I put it on?

Apparently, no such compatibility matrix exists. BTW, had previously asked
same question about OpenVMS, same answer.

RESPONSE (Tom Blinn)

The closest thing to what you seek is the Software Product Description
for the older version; currently, it's called the QuickSpec but for the
older versions (like V4.0F) it was the SPD. These might be available on
the www.tru64unix.compaq.com web site, but bear in mind that the older
documents describe products that are considered obsolete and that are in
some cases no longer supported.

As a general rule, nothing currently marketed as far as hardware can be
assumed to work with V4.0F, except for a few system that have been here
for quite a while. The DS10 and DS20E will work with V4.0F (although
they are happier with V4.0G). The current ES and GS series will not.
Many of the currently available options (network cards, SCSI cards, and
the like) were not supported in V4.0F although some were in V4.0G. And
so on.. On the other hand, anything with an EV5 or EV56 processor will
probably run V4.0F and most of the early EV6 systems will as well (that
includes the DS10 and DS20E, the ES40, the GS60 and GS140, and most of
the AlphaServer and AlphaStation systems, especially anything that was
original sold under the Digital brand).
