modem connection to LAT server - how?

Hi Managers,

SYS: DS10, Tru64 5.1, DECserver 90L, LAT V5.2, Hayes Accura 56K
15400 external modem.

I am trying to get a modem connection set up using the above. This
used to work fine until the building was hit by lightning and the
modem was fried. The old modem was a Zoom 1400. I have tried a
couple of different modems since and haven't had any luck.

The configuration hasn't been changed and I am using the same ports
on the DECserver. The clients use hyperterminal on a WIN PC.
When dialing in the modem handshakes and a connection seems to
established but where a couple of presses of the return key would
bring up a terminal prompt (->), now nothing happens.

However I from one server I can cat a file or echo to /dev/tty0n and
the results appear on the hyperterminal screen. So it appears as if I
have one way communication.

I have a dumb terminal set up to the server so I can configure it and I
was wondering if anyone knew:

1) Should the inittab be set to respawn for this LAT device?
2) The server port was set to printer. Could that be correct?
3) Does any one have access to a similar server that can verify the
settings I should have for a receiving port?

Does anyone have any idea why what I am missing? Could this be a
problem with the modem set up? I have used at&c1, at&d2, atq1,
ate0, ats0=1 and at&w.

Thanx.
Dp.
