I just discovered that the baud rate on the hyperterminal was set
down to 2400 instead of 9600 as show by consvar -l. The console is
back not that the baud rate is correct.

I seem to have created a problem on my system. I have been trying
to
re-connect a modem to the system (the modem was blown after
lightening
hit the building). The modem was originally connected to a DECserver
90L. I couldn't get a login using the LAT servers so I thought I'd
connect it directly to the system.
The console is a laptop connected to /dev/tty00 (port 1) on the Alpha
via a serial connection and uses Hyperterminal. /dev/tty01 is used by
the UPS. I disconnected the UPS cable, killed the daemon, and
connected the modem. I modified the remote and inittab files to use
/dev/tty01 at 9600 baud (at least that's what I thought). After `init
q`, I did `tip b9600`. I got a connected message, an error about
unable to create log but I couldn't issue any at commands. I killed
the terminal that I was using tip on and later I noticed that the
console screen characters were un-readable.
This happened because I had used the device /dev/tty00 instead of
tty01 (see below). I put the files back as before and rebooted the
server but my messages was still garbled (the messages file is okay).
Obviously this means that I can't go into single users mode or halt
the system. I tried to login at the console but that doesn't seem to
work either.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my console back to
normal?? I will get back to the modem after I have my console back
again.
