Cant Open Logfile

My skills being tested....

Unable to open terminal window....
or switching from root to a user...
error:
can't open logfile. terminating abnormally

Can't exactly find out what log file perms are wrong.
Chekec utmp, wtmp, all seem OK.. v5.1
Tried trace...but it not helpful in this case.
[trace su - username]
Any hints?
