Thanks to Kat, Thomas, Selden and Pat for responding so promptly. Special
thanks goes to Pat, who also took the time to have a look at the dump itself
too, and gave his/her insights :-)

So the steps to follow in the event of a fatal crash can be summarized as
follows (this can be nothing new to experienced people, but it can be of
help to newbies like me):

1. Press the Halt button
2. At the >>> prompt, type 'crash', then 'boot'
3. Look at /var/adm/crash. There will be a few files generated by an ad-hoc
utility (crashdc) which runs during bootup. There will be a copy of the
kernel, a compressed core image, and a crash-data test file, which is sort
of a summary of the system state at the moment of the dump.
4. There is general consensus in that the next wise thing to do is to have a
Compaq tech person have a look at the files.

regards,
cl.
