SUMMARY: tru64 5.1.A SCSI Adapter 3X-KZPCA-AA panics kernel

Symtoms:

After installing the 3X-KZPCA-AA adapter system boot of tru64 5.1A crashes.

Solution:

If you just add in
a new SCSI adapter into a system that never had an adapter of that type
before (I can't tell from your post whether you previously had one of
the same type adapter in the configuration or not), and then you try to
boot your old "custom" kernel (the one that matches the hardware in the
box prior to the addition), then the driver code for the new hardware
(if the hardware is known to the kernel) will get "loaded on the fly",
and SOME drivers don't do this gracefully -- in fact, some drivers are
going to panic the system. I'm sure the driver for your KZPCA is NOT a
driver that was tested for dynamic loading -- no one expects to be able
to dynamically add SCSI interfaces into a running system.

Try booting the "genvmunix" (if this is in a cluster, make sure you are
booting the "clu_genvmunix" file), and see if it behaves better.

from firmware
>>> boot -f genvmunix

then as root run doconfig. Make sure doconfig puts the new kernel into
place as /vmunix and reboot

apparently kernels built at install time or patch time, or whenever,
only included necessary drivers. So the drivers for the scsi card in
question are only 1/2 there somehow and the kernel panics.

At least the above is what worked in my case. It was strange to say the
least.
