SUMMARY: Ds20e won't boot after loading 6.2 firmware

Thanks to Peter Gergen for his tips, after a hardware call to HPQ the
problem ended up being one of simple human error.

The console connection was plugged into com2 instead of com1. When the
console is initialised as part of the boot sequence I saw the boot 'hang'
when the output was merely being redirected to com1. If this machine had
been built to the point of having a configured network I would have been
able to telnet/ssh in to verify the boot was sucessful.

The reason for the problem:

I had been rebooting this machine every half hour or so on the day the
problem started, causing our Polycenter Console Manager machine to send an
alert to all system managers, myself included. A member of another section
wondered if the alerts were connects and disconnects caused by a loose or
faulty cable, and kindly checked the terminal server connections at the back
of the all the machines in the cabinet by unplugging and replugging them.

Half the machines, including the one I was having problems with, had the
console connection replaced into com2 instead of com1.

Live and learn. Thanks for reading and I hope this saves someone else (and
compaq) the wasted time and effort of a hardware call to figure this out.

Subject: Ds20e won't boot after loading 6.2 firmware

Hi all,

I have exactly the same problem as this posting. After a firmware upgrade
that seemed to go smoothly I can't boot from the tru64 5.1a install cd, the
original firmware cd, or the boot disk. The firmware cd was a copy of a 6.2
cd. Before people scream, the copy was sent to us from HPQ support as it
seems the official 6.2 cds haven't made it to australia yet en mass. Go
figure.

Can anyone shed some light, or can the original poster please summarise ?

If a summary had been posted I wouldn't have to be asking the same question
again.

Thanks very much,
