Thanks for the responses.

If one could access the system while /var is full, this would be bad from
the security perspective, because auditing would not occur.

Also, one suggestion is that I might want to report a bug with 'su'. 'su'
should be able to function even with the full-disk condition.

Subject: Recovering from full /var file system

Tru64 Managers:

Is there any way to recover from a full file system (/var), other than
halting the system and rebooting into single-user mode?

/var filled up due to a runaway auditing report job.

Couldn't login to the console, using Command-line Login -- the console would
just display repeatedly "NOTE: CFS: File system full: /var" and the login
would not complete.

I tried using an existing an user session [that was already logged in] and
using "su" -- but that did not work either. The error was returned, "Bus
error" (no other details in the error message)

The real solution is to of course fix the script and add more disk space and
monitoring. But if you have other suggestions for how to recover from this
situation, please advise.

Thank you.

R E Aldridge
