SUMMARY: Tru64 licensing

Thanks to Alan, Dr. Thomas, Jeffrey, Brian, Jim, John, Mahendra, one unnamed
source afraid of the Compaq license police and the Compaq license police for
their detailed replies. Other than the obvious inane answers that unlawful
use of licenses on duplicate machines is wrong (this is why I used the word
'can' and not 'may' in my questions) the most complete answers came from Dr.
Thomas and Brian. Thanks again for your quick and detailed responses.

Questions:
Having just inherited the administration of many Alpha systems running Tru64
4.0f and 5.1a I have a basic question about licensing - please forgive my
ignorance.

Are the license pak certificates in any way tied to the physical hardware
(i.e. in the jumble of license information on the certificate is the system
S/N buried)? Can I simplify my administration by using the same license keys
on different systems? Do Tru64 systems broadcast or announce their licenses
to other Tru64 systems in anyway? Is there any easy way to query the license
information remotely?

Thanks,
Alex Hewson

Dr.Thomas:
The license PAK information has never been tied to any hardware serial
number, for the simple reason that it's a total nightmare to ever get it
right.

In general, the license PAK information will work on any system for which it
provides adequate "units". Some licenses are in fact sized for specific
system models, especially the "base OS" licenses. It
is a good idea to make sure that the "base OS" license that you have
registered for each system is the one that came with the system (if at all
possible). Most of the "layered products" licenses are NOT sized to the
system model, and "one size fits all", but remember, it is a violation of
the software license to use the software on systems where it isn't licensed
-- the license PAK data is just a "token" to represent the valid license.
So as long as you have valid licenses for the software on the systems where
you are using it, it really is not critical that the license PAK registered
matches the original license purchase/delivery.

In other words, it's unlikely to ever matter -- the systems don't
cross-check with one another, and if you ever were audited to see whether
you were "cheating", as long as someone has the paperwork that shows the
right licenses were purchased and paid for, it does not really matter if the
LMF data matches perfectly.

Of course, I am telling you this SOLELY as my personal opinion; it is based
on years of practical experience, but if you really care, find your
company's attorney and have them ask HP's attorney, but don't be surprised
if you can't get a formal answer, because the attorney's won't understand
:^)

And Brian:

Nope, I just keep one set to use and the rest in a fire safe. There are
some little things, like you need 2 usr licenses for a dual processor box.

[root@storage brianh]# lmf list
Product Status Users: Total
Active

OSF-BASE active unlimited
OSF-USR active unlimited
OSF-USR active, multiple unlimited
OSF-SVR active unlimited
[root@storage brianh]#

That will show you the current licenses installed.
