In short: uerf is no longer supported on newer machines like the ES45
Instead use CompaqAnalyze (ca(8) which is part of WEBES

Uerf stopped being supported around the time the 4100/4000
class machine came out. The problem is that the error log
written by your system is a format that uerf(8) can't read,
though the difference is probably subtle. You want to use
the supported tool, Compaq Analyze. It is included in the
WEBES kit that is on one of the Associate Product CDROMs.
You might also try DECEvent, which is on the Associated
Product CDROMs.
