Good evening,

Many helpful comments have been received since my morning question. I
would like to thank the following people (in alphabetical order) for
taking time to send me quick and pinpoint comments:

Michael Austin of First DBA Source, Inc. (on comp.os.vms)
Selden E. Ball, Jr of Cornell University
Dr. Thomas P. Blinn of HP
Regis Carlier
Kurt A. Ludwig
David C. Ross of cantire
Michael Wheelock

The followings are some tips I find useful in this case:

1. Use TeraTermPro instead of HyperTerminal, because it is much more
transparent.
The most recent version of TTPro can be downloaded from the TTSsh page
at http://www.zip.com.au/~roca/ttssh.html
or from the author's site at
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html, which indeed is
helpful.
2. Disconnect the harddisks to stop the boot, which helps me to keep the
system at the SRM level.
3. Garbage indicates an incorrect baud rate. Try resetting it starting
at different rate. In my case, the baud rate was set at 38400.
4. Hit cntrl-c to interrupt the booting process, once baud rate is set
right.
5. Try typing a few "enter" on the main keyboard to get an SRM console
prompt on the graphics head, which is not verified by this case yet.
6, "set console graphics" at SRM prompt.

Thank you all,
Zhiqing

==== my original question ====

I recently received a DS10 without a graphics card. Adding to it an Elsa
GLoria Synergy card gives me simply an banner page of the card followed
by an empty blue screen. It appears to boot, via the serial console, to
some unknown systems, to which nobody has access. I am trying to convert
the console to graphics so that a fresh operating system can be
installed.

I know that, once I have SRM, this can be done by setting the SRM
console variable to graphics. My problem here is that I don't have a
terminal around. Hooking up a PC HyperTerminal via a null modem
connection to the 1st serial port of DS10 shows a little bit garbage on
the HyperTerminal. The settings of the HyperTerminal are 9600, 8N1 with
software handshaking, which works just fine to my PWS 500AU.

Am I missing anything here? Is there any other way to convert the
console to graphics? How can I reset the machine to its true factory
default, which, I think, allows me to select which console should be
used?
