"Unavailable" ethernet status

Hello Managers,

      I am looking for a command to see the status of my ethernet.
Meaning if I unplug/ pull the cable from the back of the server I would
like to see a status indicating that it has become unavailable. Also I was
wondering if there is something like a MAC level ping command. I am
running version 5.1A. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
