First some background:
All systems are Tru64 5.1
We have an environment for Oracle Applications 11i/Database 8i
that was theoretically spec'd by Oracle and Compaq. The environment
consists of a pair of GS80s clustered, one running the concurrent
manager services and one running the database tier - the Forms/Web
front end is on a pair of DS20s load balanced with a simple round
robin dns.
As it stands we have 4procs and 6G of RAM in the database server,
2 procs and 6G in the concurrent manager server. A consultant from
Oracle tells us that that won't handle our load and that load would
scale better if we ran everything on one box with 6 procs rather than
split out. He seems to be concerned partly with the fact that tcp
latency might be higher than IPC latency for some of the communication
between the concurrent managers and the database, however that
communication is over memory channel so I think his concerns may be
less warranted than he is making out.
He also seems to be telling us that CM processes are more cpu bound than
DB processes and that we need more horsepower there than the 2 cpus that
we have in that system.
This particular Oracle consultant doesn't seem to have much experience
with Tru64, TruCluster, etc. and wasn't able to give a straight answer
on where we're going to see bottlenecks etc. given our current environment.
now the question:
Management is willing to buy 2 more processors and pay the licensing fees
etc. to get them up and running. Do people that know think those procs
would be better used in the DB box and run everything off of there, or
are we better off for scalability and performance if we keep the concurrent
managers and database tiers on separate systems and drop the 2 new procs
into the box currently tagged to serve CM?
Does anybody have any experience with such an upgrade and the ability to
speak to the improvements in performance gained by either of the options?
