DECdts without DECNET but with X.25.

Hi Managers,

We have the following requirement: A Tru64 4.0f machine which has a X.25
Wide Area Networking software and license installed, also needs to be
time-synchronized via DECdts (dtss) in a DECnet network. However there is
no other DECnet connectivity required. Now I need to find out if I really
need to purchase a full DECnet (end-node or extended) license just for
running the DECdts part of DECnet.

Apparently the X.25 installation also has installed these DECnet
components on the machine:

DNAKBIN403 installed DECnet-Plus Kernel Components (DECnet-Plus
Standard Run-time Environment)
DNANETMAN403 installed DECnet-Plus Network Management
(DECnet-Plus Standard Run-time Environment)
DNANETMANGUI403 installed DECnet-Plus Network Management GUI
(Optional DECnet-Plus Components)

and the components are also licensed because this is apparently covered by
the X.25 WAN license.

Now I've made an experiment today. I've just installed DNABASE403 on the
machine which also has X.25 installed. Now even though I cannot configure
DECnet (decnetsetup complains about a missing license), I can still use
ncl to configure and start up dtss just fine with:

ncl> create dtss type server
ncl> set dtss decnet courier role backup courier
ncl> enable dtss set clock = true

and it even seems to run (I can't really check because I don't have
another DECdts server here).

Finally for my question: Any idea anyone if this really works as I think
and if this is legal?

Thanks a lot // Tom
