Thanks to Dr. Tom Blinn, alan@nabeth.cxo.cpqcorp.net and Walter North. Tru64
unix version 5X will run on these models, and future versions should until
they are retired. I was confused by the info from the Firmware revision
booklet.

Here are the replies:

Dr. Tom Blinn:

I'm not sure where you got the idea that just because a platform doesn't
need newer firmware to run a new OS release, it won't run the new OS rev.

For the platforms you mention, they are supported in the latest versions
of Tru64 UNIX, and have not needed any firmware updates to work. This is
true of many of the "legacy" platforms (although the support for the very
old TURBOchannel type systems has been dropped in V5.1 and later). Your
systems should run V5.1 and later releases just fine, until such time as
they are formally retired.

Of course, we'd be happy to sell you some newer systems, it's just that
you don't necessarily need them.

Tom

Alan:

You may be confusing Firmware CDROM versions (FW CD Vx.y)
with SRM firmware revisions (SRM FW rev). The two are
different. The system requires a minimum SRM version;
V5.8 for the AlphaServer 800 and V5.7 for the 1000A.
The SRM version isn't the firmware CDROM version (of
which you seem to have V6.1).

Walter:

I'm running V5.1 on a 1000A 5/333 (DEC1000A_5) firmware rev 5.7
