I didn't ask any questions of the Tru64 list folks but I thought the resolution to our problem was worthy of sharing.
Details are as follows;
1. System was crashing during the transition from runlevel 0,s or 2 through to 3. Everything I tried caused the system to crash during the transition. Interestingly generic kernel boot was successful. Compaq support was brilliant and between us we found and resolved the problem. Thanks Sajith Abeyanayake.
2. Error was an invalid memory read access from kernel mode - Panic (cpu1): kernel memory fault
3. It was determined that /sbin/kmknod was the cause of the crash. (this is run from /etc/inittab to ensure new hardware has a device file) Sajith found this out from the crash data I forwarded to him and at the same time, by process of elimination, I had also come to the same conclusion.
4. There was a file in the /dev directory which had been present since Feb 28 2002. This files name was
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
5. The permissions on the /dev directory were incorrect and probably allowed this file to be created. (checking showed that it was created by the application running on the system and by accident.)
6. This file was deleted and /sbin/kmknod no longer crashed the system.
My major concern is that this utility caused a two day outage due to a file it couldn't handle. I intend to follow this up with Digi...I mean Comp...sorry The New HP.
