V4.0F+PK4 - BIND question

All...

Please accept my apologies for asking a BIND related question but I have
little knowledge in this area.

Our internal systems all use and belong to an internal BIND domain - lets
call it "my.domain". So if I have a system named "Hobie16" then its fully
qualified domain name is "hobie16.my.domain".

We also have a number of external publically visible domains - lets call one
"ext.domain" for example.

Currently my resolv.conf file looks like this:

domain my.domain
nameserver nn.nn.nn.nn
nameserver mm.mm.mm.mm

and this works just fine.

I have a node which needs to be able to resolve names in both the internal &
external domains. My "dns & bind" book says that, if I have a v4.9.3
resolver, I can replace the domain directive with the search directive. So
I now have:

search my.domain ext.domain
nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
nameserver yy.yy.yy.yy

where these two IP addresses are of resolvers which can apparently resolv
external names.

The system I am testing this on is V4.0F+PK4. It can resolv names in my
my.domain just fine as before. But I cant resolv names in my ext.domain
domain. They fail with:

*** myresolver.my.domain can't find xxxxxx: Non-existent host/domain

Question: Do I have a v4.9.3 or later resolver?? How do I find out??

Question: what else am I doing wrong?

Thanking you in advance.
