Hello Everyone:

Many thanks to all the managers on the list for a timely and accurate answer to my sendmail problems.

Thanks go out to Giorgio Pastore, Ken Klien, Michael Richter, Jay Wren, sysadmin@astro.su.se, A. Mahendra Raja, Elizabeth Harvey Forsyth, Chris Los, Robert M. Lang, John Losey, Thomas M. Payerli, Brian Williams, and Kevin Fleming.

The general consensus was to remove the sendmail entry from the startup scripts by getting rid of them in a number of ways. We opted to just de-link them, but I also liked the suggestion of moving the script to a directory called "disabled". Also there were suggestions for changing the number after the "S", and also changing the uppercase "S" to a lowercase "s".

The daemon was then killed, with the /sbin/init.d/sendmail stop command.

After that I looked in the /var/adm/syslog.dated/current/ directory, and checked the file that was named mail.log. On both of my machines, it had the beginning of the first contact at around 21:20, with an address that could not be resolved. There was a total of 32,487 mails on our one box, and 15, 657 for the other box. That was in less than an eight hour period.

Thanks for your help once again!
