SUMMARY: desta

The original question is included below.
Thanks to:

Bryan Lavelle, Shaukat Riaz, Derk Tegeler, and especially to Elin Vaeth
of Compaq who explained everything one would like to know about WEBES
(including the fact that I was running an out-of-date version).

The basic problem (which is known) is that I had a hardware (memory)
error (now fixed) whic was logging a lot of error messages (mostly
correctable) into the binary error log, thus causing desta to spend a
lot of time "scavenging" ievents at startup.

The current version of WEBES is 4.0 but it doesn't seem to be
downloadable from the Compaq web site. The Compaq technician only had
v3.1 which I installed for now.

An important point from Elin Vaeth:
Compaq Analyze always relinquishes processor cycles to other programs
whenever they need them. In other words, the program uses whatever
resources are available.

I will now save my error log and start a new one.

Original message:
I have a process desta_exec started at boot time which has started
taking up 99.9% of the cpu time. Running 'desta stop' followed by
'desta start' doesn't solve this problem.

Before that we had a couple of system crashes (Processor Machine Check)
plus a failed system disk (since restored). We still have lots of
"CPU EXCEPTIONS" (corrected) being recorded (a call is out to Compaq).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Peter
