Thanx to Dr Blinn and Robert for a very speedy reply.
I think the short answer is no, looking at the article again is does
refer to tcsh specifically. I think I got confused cos it works on a
Linux box I have (that uses tcsh) and I expected it to work on csh.
Alas.
popd and pushd are available though.
Good luck all.

Hi Managers,

I recently saw in an article (sysadmin mag March 2002) that it was
possible to do "cd -" to change into your last directory. It would be
a usefully to have this feature but I am not sure how to get it
working.

I have tried cd - and cd $owd but none work. I guess I will need to
set this up in my cshrc. Does anyone know how? I can't find it in the
Power Tools book either.

Thanx.
