The replies so far are divided in their opinions :-) So some further
information.
The machine is currently in domain1, but for various reasons we want it to
appear in domain2 as well. The trouble is referemces to multiple domains in
the /etc/hosts file seem to confuse certain applications (particularly
Oracle 9i, which we have on the machine). For example, in /etc/hosts
10.0.0.1 myhost myhost.domain1 myhost.doman2
doesn't work.
10.0.0.1 myhost myhost.domain2
10.0.0.1 myhost.domain1
Does seem to work but only if the various files containing the host name
have the domain added to them. To be honest I think we are just *playing
around* here so see if there is any combination of entries which work with
the applications. I would be much happier leaving things how they should be
(and fixing the applications!!!!) or just moving the machine into domain2
and using a DNS entry to maintain links with domain1.

Solaris box's hostname. The machine is a V880, 2 processors, 4 GB RAM
running Solaris 2.8 and a reasonably upto date patch level.
I have been asked to change the references to the hostname of the machine
to the hostname + fully qualified domain name (i.e. from "myhost" to
"myhost.mydomain") in the following files:
/etc/nodename
/etc/hostname.ce0
/etc/net/ticlts/hosts

As far as I'm aware, and according to all the reference material these
files should contain only the local hostname of the machine. The one time
someone here actually changed these files to contain the fully qualified
domain name it caused all sorts of problems which I was unable to resolve
to my satisfaction without doing a sys-unconfig and rebooting.
So I guess my questions are, is it ok to do this? Are there any problems
associated with doing it? What are the pitfalls to avoid if it is a valid
configuration?
