Solaris 8 2/02 and Sun One Directory 5.1

On Sun One Directory 5.1 running on Solaris 8 2/02, I am able to store a MD5
password generated on linux system, use it for this linux system, but I
cannot use it to bind to the directory server itself.
In the documentation, Sun states "You cannot choose to encrypt passwords
using the NS-MTA-MD5 password storage scheme. The storage scheme is present
in iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 but only for reasons of backward
compatibility with earlier versions of Directory Server."

I was of the assumption that I would be able to bind to the directory with
this MD5 password I loaded, change it, and it would then be saved in a
different format as set in the directory configuration (clear text, crypt,
sha, ssha).

Was my assumption wrong, or am I doing something wrong?

Also I have heard that Solaris 9 supports MD5. Does that mean Sun's
Directory Server will use MD5 or does the Directory use its owns encryption
libraries?

Thanks,

Celso
