SUMMARY: /dev/null cannot create.

Thanks to all those who replied to this mail
Sorry for not mentioning the fact that /proc was not getting
mounted and then the hostname was never assigned to the system
Here are the steps I followed.
# boot -s
# mount -F proc /proc
# ln -s /devices/pseudo/mm@0:null /dev/null
# hostname xxxx
# ifconfig hme0 ipaddress plumb

and press ctrl+d for multiuser boot.
