init 6 doesn't work - automount hang

Hello everyone,

For some reason I can't restart my servers cleanly. I always used to
use init 6 but for some reason this no longer works so I looked for
other methods of restarting, these include /usr/sbin/shutdown -g0 -y
-i6, reboot etc. I get the same result. The error message I get is
automountd not running, retrying. The system then hangs in this
constant state forever failing to unmount everything. I have tried to
unmount everything before I restart, but this is an endless task. The
only way to restart the system when it gets into this state is using
stop a, highly unpractical and usually requires you to fsck etc when
starting up again, then reboot cleanly using init 6.

Thanks for reading, and for any help given.
