Finding out kernel parameter settings?

The information I have regarding finding out about what all the kernel
parameters etc. are set to is to use the adb command, and then enter the
name of the parameter followed by /D and it displays the current setting
e.g.

# adb -k
maxusers/D
maxusers :
maxusers : 1948
$q
#

I know that you can change many of the values by declaring them in
/etc/system and rebooting, thats not what I am after.

The questions are...

a) is there an easier way than using adb
b) if not, will adb -k hang my system at all
c) is it okay to use adb from within a here document

Thanks in advance,

Anthony
