raid versus jbod, 3310 questions

We're buying a 3310 array for more storage (we have a full A1000 now)
to hook up to 220R(s).

Our primary application is dealing with large images (100-300 Mbyte)
which are read/written sequentially.

We were initially quoted a box with 2 Raid controllers -- which
seems like major overkill (higher availability isn't some we want
to pay for, space is). Any opinions about the performance
issues for RAID versus JBOD? Also opinions about getting an ultra-160
controller versus the ultra scsi in the 220R now.

In suns documentation, they discuss (briefly) having 2 hosts connected to it.
Any experience in how well this works? Can the same disks be mounted
on two hosts and some intermediary (I guess the raid controller) maintains
consistency?
