Installing a SunSwift Card on a Solaris 8 machine

Hello,

In order to obtain fast ethernet connectivity, I have installed a
SunSwift card on an Ultra 1 running Solaris 8. I am referencing the SUN
document

SunSwift SBus Adapter Installation and User's Guide (Sun document number
802-4535-10)

However, this document doesn't seem to have been updated since December
1995 and consequently only provides installation instructions covering
as far as Solaris 2.5. For instance, there are instructions on
installing the SUNWhmd and SUNWhmdu packages which are already installed
as part of the default Solaris 8 install.

I would like to keep the existing low-speed le0 interface in case the
SunSwift card ever fails. I've created a hostname.hme0 file in /etc but
when I connect the network cable to the high-speed interface on the
SunSwift card I'm getting an error on boot

le0: No Carrier - Cable disconnected or hub link test disabled?

Obviously I'm missing some step which will allow the Ultra to accept a
network connection via the hme0 interface and not the le0 interface,
even when both interfaces are present. Note that the hme0 interface
shows up fine using

show-devs

at the ok prompt (after a stop-A) and that it also shows up OK using
ifconfig.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
John Kelly.
