I'd think this would have happened to other people, but searching Sun
Managers, sunsolve, and usenet did not net me a solution.
I've got a U1 and a U2; the U2 is known to install Solaris 2.6 without a
problem; the U1's state may be considered suspect (had to replace PROM on it
some time ago).
Neither of these machines is willing to install Solaris 9. When I boot from
CDROM, I get:
--- {0} ok boot cdrom -install Boot device: /sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@6,0:f File and args: -install Warning: boot will not enable cache Enter filename [kernel/unix]: | NOTICE: 64-bit OS installed, but the 32-bit OS is the default for the processor(s) on this system.
