I received a number of replies. Thanks to all.
A number of people suggested that I could add an alias to /etc/hosts with a
"." in it. This is not what we wanted to do and have used to eliminate in
some of our systems. I really wanted to disable sendmail as it is not
needed for our application and but we do use cron and wanted to still be
able to get mail to local users.
Several admin suggested modifing sendmail.conf which also assumes sendmail
is still running.
This is what I finally did:
"All you have to do is:
# /etc/rc2.d/S88sendmail stop
# mv /etc/rc2.d/S88sendmail /etc/rc2.d/s88sendmail
Each time that you install patches (recommended cluster patches from
Sun) you will have to check the patches don't create the rc script again"
The reason is that sendmail is not needed for local mail delivery. Several
people mentioned this. I only need local delivery which I am still getting
after doing this.
