Firstly, many thanks to:
Robert Muniz, Darren Dunham, Casper Dik and Cris Lovett for their responses.
I have duly checked the settings you all mentioned and they are all ok.
However, the problem still remains, I really do not have much more
information apart from the server is not meant to have a console attached
but is still required to reboot.
The main symptoms again are:
Type init5 / init 6 at the server
The prompt is returned.
Running ptree shows that 'init' has initiated as a process but is doing
nothing.
The server hangs.
Any more suggestions would be great.
