/bin/passwd hanging in Solaris 8

Dear List,

What could cause command-line passwd to hang?

This is occurring even though /etc/nsswitch.conf is

passwd: files
group: files

I'm running fairly vanilla Solaris 8 on Netra-X1,
with 8_Recommended from March 6 2003, with no
3rd party apps on the box running currently.
