Cron and sendmail

I continually get: "[ID 702911 mail.alert] unable to qualify my own domain
name" from sendmail. I am however concerned with turning sendmail off due
to it's interaction with cron and possibly missing errors from cron jobs. I
know I can add a generic domain name and get rid of the problem but
customers get confused when I add generic domain names to systems as these
are really stand alone boxes. I would like to hear thoughts on the best
solution.
