Server Hangs on init 5

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

I am running Solaris 8 on an old Sun 5m(I think) box acting as a server,
there is no console attached to this.

When executing 'init 5' or 'init 6' and possibly any other init state (I've
not tried any more at the moment) the server does nothing until a console is
attached. This then allows all of the messages to be output to the console
and the server then shuts down. In the environment that I am workng in I
want to be able to shut the server down but I do not want to have to attach
a dumb terminal to do so and so I am wondering if there is:

* A patch to resolve this
* A command that can be run before shutting down to clear the
/dev/console messages
* A workaround that can be applied.

Many thanks in anticipation.
