DLT4000 / tape backup questions

Hi all,

I am currently experiencing some problems doing backups to tape and was
wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Here is my current setup:

Nightly, I rcopy the filesystems I am interested in backing up from the
servers to another machine (a SunBlade 150, Solaris 9) in our lab with
enough space to hold the collective filesystems of interest.

Currently, I then mount this filesystem via NFS to another machine (an
Ultra 1, Solaris 8) which has the tapedrive connected to it. The
tapedrive is a Sun DLT4000 with a DLT type IV tapes. I am currently just
tarring the filesystems from the mounted directory onto the tape. Not
sophisticated I know, but it works with the machines we have.

The problem I am experiencing is the tape drive process is very slow -
there are about 12 gigs to back up, and that takes well over 12 hours.
It does not appear to be near the 1.5M per second that it is supposed to
be able to write (in 20gig/uncompressed mode). The things I think it
could be causing the problems are:

  1) The block size I am using in tar is wrong .. I have tried 96 (as I
read in the users manual) and various other sizes around 96 (64,128).

 2) The transfer via NFS is taking a while? No real evidence here, just a
gut feeling. Could the client have to re-request some blocks if the
blocks it is recieving are bigger than what can be written to tape?

Any suggestions or help j or any troubleshooting
techniques that might help me figure it out would be useful. Thanks in
advance.
