Q: Connect A1000 DiskArray to (Sol8 OR Linux ) x86 box ??

Hi All,

Just curious about this topic, and archive digging yields questions but
no answers :-)

Does anyone know for certain (ideally from experience) if it is possible
to connect an A1000 disk array to an X86 box (running either Sol8x86 OR
Linux) such that you can non-destructively mount previously created UFS
filesystems (which contain data) that already exist on the A1000 .. ?
[in my case, the 12 x 36 gig A1000 has a single large raid5 volume,
containing one slice that occupies all the free space - a pretty simple
config, really, for a hardware raid disk array].

My "first test" in this domain was to transfer the DiffSCSI PCI Card &
attached A1000 array from a SunSparc box over to a Sol8X86 box. The OS
detects the new PCI card just fine ; configuration is a breeze ; and
from "format" I can *see* the a1000 disk array as a SCSI device on the
appropriate controller. However, attempting to observe partitions on the
device, "format" tells "First format this drive" - ie, it cannot see
partitions of any kind (solaris UFS or otherwise)

In contrast, on the SunSparc box (where A1000 is used in production, in
association with RaidManager 6.22 software), running "format" command, I
can easily see slices defined on the a1000.

This suggests to me that an A1000 cannot be used without also installing
the Raid Manager software, but of course, if RM software is only
available for SunSparc, it is impossible to use an A1000 on a
non-sunsparc box (?)

There are other possible options I guess, but, debugging what I suspect
is already a solved problem seems a bit foolish, hence my query.

Any assistance with this is certainly much appreciated,
