IP numbers, netmasks and network numbers

We are running Solaris8 on a SUN E450. I would like to know how Solaris
calculates network numbers to put in /etc/netmasks during initial system
setup. We are using an IP in class B but using a class C netmask for
subnetting. All I entered during initial system setup was IP (14X.YYY.8.111)
and netmask (255.255.255.0). I now see, in /etc/netmasks
14X.YYY.0.0 255.255.255.0 #hme0
I now added a second line for the backup LAN on a gigabit NIC
14X.YYY.208.0 255.255.248.0 #ce0

but I have some concerns about this (the second line being a subset of
first). All these times we never had problems with that first entry in
netmasks (may be luck). I feel when we reboot this machine next time, the
backup LAN may not configure itself properly. (The first time the GIG card
was configured using ifconfig command).

What do others think?
