Veritas installation problems on E4500

Hello all,

I have a rather convoluted problem I am seeking help with.

I have an E4500 running Solaris8 2/02 revision -16 with an A5200 array attached. There a 7 disks in the array. The array and disks were taken from an older system with veritas 3.2 installed which was decommissioned.

My task is to reinstall the OS with the file system across 3 disks. Then mirror those 3 disks individaully to 3 others with one left over for backup/hot swap.

Problem #1- After reinstalling the OS on the 3 disks I installed Veritas 3.2, mirrored the boot drive, told veritas to leave all other disks alone, and rebooted. Normally this works fine, the system comes up and I do all other encapsulation and mirroring via the vmsa gui. This time, however, once the system rebooted, veritas grabbed all of the other disks that were not part of the file system, encapulated them and locked them. Further more, when I try to encapsulate the remaining 2 file system disks I get an error saying that they are of an unsupported file system type. and can do nothing with them.

How do I avoid this in the future and correct it now?

Problem #2- A fellow engineer recommended that I use "Format" to reformat the disks and then reinstall the OS and Volume management software. After formatting, the disk I tested this on is unable to be read by the os. It shows the size as 0 and "Format" cannot recognize the disk type at all. Even when choosing "auto-configure" from within the format utility.

Is there a way to make these disks available to the OS again?

Anyone have any links to helpful documentation or some idea how to correct this? I REALLY don't want to have to replace these disks without some idea of how to make them useful again.

I am rather new to system admin work so please forgive me any ignorent comments or acts.

I hope this is enough info, if not email me.

Thank you in advance.
