pkgmap and content disappear during a pkgadd. where?

During a pkgadd, pkgmap and the install tree seem to be missing from the
package directory where they are normally located. Anyone have any idea
where they (temporarily during pkgadd) go? Details:

I have a package that does some installations of some files. I also have
a preinstall and a postinstall script that I want to run that will,
ideally, take the list of files in pkgmap, and perform system based
customizations on them. I was planning on using grep and awk to weed what
I need out of pkgmap and then process the files. However, investigation
during running preinstall shows that the pkgmap file is GONE. What's
more, so is the install tree where the original files are. They also seem
to be missing out of /var/sadm/pkg/PACKAGE too.

While I can just create a static list of package files, I would ideally
like to use the pkgmap file [which accurately reflects the most recent
file manifest]. Anyone know where it might be? I'm running Solaris 8
[02/02] with standard patch set.

cheers and thanks,
