Sun v880, RAID, configuration

Some general questions:
First, an introduction. We recently purchased a Sun v880 to use as an
Oracle database server. We've steadily moved our older, NT based DB
servers to the new solaris box.

The question stems more from, what's an optimal partitioning scheme for
such a system? We're currently using the following:
"Mirror d8: /export/home, 24.57GB, striped c1t0d0s7 & c1t1d0s7"
"Mirror d2: / 1.34GB, striped c1t0d0s0 & c1t1d0s0"
"Mirror d5: Swap 8GB, striped c1t0d0s1 & c1t1d0s1"
"RAID d9: /oracle 67.81GB c1t2d0s7, c1t3d0s7, c1t4d0s7"

First, I didn't partition this system - I'm left trying to get it
working fully and I'm much more used to a Linux server. I'm not
impressed with the previous partitioning and layout. The system really
isn't a "user" system, but a pure database system, and thus the large
/export/home isn't really necessary. Further, I'm not sure that a
mirrored swap space is a good idea. Regardless of the partitioning
scheme, I have a few questions.

Does using a software mirror slow down the system? Does the v880 &
Solaris have a RAID system built in and what can I do to optimize this?
Is there a separate RAID controller card I should look at? Is the
software RAID a decent solution and how intensive is it on I/O and CPU
time? How reliable is such a RAID configuration? If one drive fails,
how easy/hard is it to recover?

Further, are there any options I should set or unset when mounting
/oracle. I've got the following set:
read/write/setuid/intr/largefiles/noatime/onerror=panic/dev=1540009

Additionally: What other partition/striping/etc. schemes would people
recommend? Should I even bother with striping? Due to the lack of
complexity and demands right now, we're not looking at VxFS. Should we
look at VxFS?

Eventually, we might put WebSphere on this system. As part of that,
what recommendations do people have for partitioning and configuration
for such an Application server? I have no experience with WebSphere,
and thus don't know space requirements or other issues. I.E. should I
have a separate /var partition? What about a separate /usr or a
/websphere partition?

Last notes: We're thinking about migrating to Solaris 9. Would this be
a recommended update? Are there additional features that would make
this worthwhile? As part of such a move, I'm going to redo the
partitioning. I have 6 36GB disks to work with and recommendations on
how to use them are welcome. This is what I'm currently thinking:

/oracle >= 60GB (Two drives in a 0+1, one extra drive NOT mirrored for
other control files & redo logs)
/export/home >= 10GB (RAID 5 slice)
/var >= 1GB (RAID 5 slice)
/usr/local >= 5GB (RAID 5 slice) - also used for websphere (eventually)
/ >= 5GB (RAID 5 slice)
Swap == 4GB (not mirrored)

If anyone has a suggestion, or thinks I'm out of my mind, please let me
know! I appreciate any and all advice, and of course will summarize.
Thanks!
Jason McIntosh
