Can almost get NIS working...

Hello,
    I almost have NIS working now.... on my NIS client, i can do the following:

====================================================================

  eMonster% ypcat passwd
  palesths:x:1002:1002:Dimitrios Palaistis,,,:/home/palesths:/bin/bash
  hotsanic:x:1005:1005:HotSaNIC User,,,:/home/hotsanic:/bin/bash
  nobody:x:65534:65534:nobody:/home:/bin/sh
  hugh:x:1001:1001:Hugh Dickson,Across the Lounge,,:/home/hugh:/bin/bash
  dan:x:1003:1003:Dan Cave,,,:/home/dan:/bin/bash
  zmerlinz:x:1004:1004:Dean Thorne,,,:/home/zmerlinz:/bin/bash
  hobbs:x:1000:1000:Richard Hobbs,,,:/home/hobbs:/bin/bash
  eMonster%

====================================================================

The above entries are not listed in my local '/etc/passwd' file on this machine,
so the NIS lookups are now working fine.

However... if i try to log in as one of these users, it doesn't work:

====================================================================

  eMonster% su - dan
  Password:
  su: Sorry
  eMonster%

====================================================================

I know i have the password correct, because i set the password up for the user
ages ago, and he hasn't changed it (i can still 'su - dan' on the NIS server).
This isn't a push issue either, i don't think.

Could it be because i'm using a shadow passwd file on the NIS server? here's
what i effectively did:

 - Add users to '/etc/passwd' on NIS server.

 - Run 'pwconv' to create shadow file containing actual passwords.

 - Push the data to the NIS server at 127.0.0.1.

 - Log in successfully on 127.0.0.1 as a user, after setting this
   machine up as a NIS client to itself.

 - Log in *unsuccessfully* on another machine in my subnet and
   domain which is set up as a NIS client, and can successfully
   list passwords from the 'ypcat passwd' command.

I think it's something to do with the shadow passwords... is the NIS push
bringing in the 'x' from '/etc/passwd' instead of bringing in the actual
password from the shadow file?

Does Solaris (my NIS client) use something different regarding NIS than Linux
(my NIS server)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... :-)

Cheers!!

Richard.
