Why some processes could not be killed with -9?

Hi,

I tried to "kill -9 <pid>" to kill some processes. But those processes remain alive.
Now I know that some processes of kernel level could not be killed with -9. For example, the process with tape or disk I/O operation. After the process send one I/O request and it does not get the reply, this process could not be killed -9 and hang.
I'd like to know if there is other type of process that could not be killed. Is there any article explaining it?
I greatly appreciate your help.
