RBAC, root as role, root cronjobs no longer run

If I set root to be a role by editing /etc/user_attr and changing
type=normal to type=role,
then the root crontab entries no longer run.
 
It looks like cron is trying to su to root, but cannot.
>From /var/spool/cron/log:
    ! Roles can only be assumed by authorized users.
    ...
    ! bad user (root) ...
 
But cron runs as root, is there any way around this ?
