rpcbind: address in use

Dear SunManagers,

I've been asked to deal with an orphaned Sun server running Solaris 2.7.
I have worked on this machine on and off over the years, but mostly via
telnet. I do not know the model number of the machine, though I can get
it this afternoon.

The machine's primary function has been to make its RAID array available
to a Macintosh lab via the Helios Appletalk program. Last month, the
machine was hit with a power outage, and it no longer appeared on the
Mac network. At this point, all they want is to get Helios running so
that people can get their files off of the machine, and then they are
going to decommission it.

Locally, the RAID array is there, all the files are there. Most existing
services are running (eg, tcpd, inetd, named, and nonproduction
installations of RealServer, sendmail, and the old Netscape httpd server).

Helios fails and blames it on rpcbind. rpcbind is not running.
Upon booting, rpcbind gives multiple "address in use" reports (udp, tcp,
ticlts, ticotsord, ticots) and reports that it "could not find loopback
transports". rpcbind -d finds all devices present and reports nothing
but successes, fails to load, and provides no diagnostics.

When I telnet to port 111, something is there, but I have not been able
to get it to talk to me and identify itself.

There are examples of rpcbind misbehavior in the archives, but they all
seem to come from old OS upgrades, like from 2.4 to 2.5. This machine
has been running for years on autopilot, and no one on staff would've had
the ability or desire to make any changes in the machine's configuration.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. I've administered BSD-derived
systems for years, but am not super-conversant with Solaris. Again,
the directive is to get Helios/Appletalk running as soon as possible so
that people can get their files off of there.

Thanks in advance, I will be happy to provide a summary.
