Hi,

Ttry with : boot system from CDROM and run FSCK manualy

#newfs -N device_name ==> this will give you alternative super blocks

 # fsck -F ufs -o b=(alternative super_block_No) Device_name.

Subject: move solaris 8 on UE2 to 220R

I'm trying to boot a disk from a UE2 in a 220R. I installed these
packages (compared /kernel/drv with a 220R already running solaris 8):

SUNWncar SUNWncarx SUNWpd SUNWpdx SUNWrtvcx SUNWusb SUNWusbx

When I boot from the disk in the 220R I get this:

Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@0,0 File and args: -r

WARNING - Unable to repair the / filesystem. Run fsck
manually (fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0). Exit the shell when
done to continue the boot process.

When I'm dropped to a shell, I find all the paths still point to SBUS
addresses:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 Sep 19 2000 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0
-> ../../devices/sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@0,0:a

I touched /reconfigure and booted with -r. I'm hesitant to do something
drastic like manually edit /etc/path_to_inst ... but I'm not really sure
what to try at this point.

Any and all pointers welcome.

Sun Managers,
I'm looking for the proper method of backing up to tape, a SparcStorage
Library (Exabyte EXB-210), from any of our Solaris 8.0 Sun systems
(11). I am having difficulty attaching to the device from the other
systems and could use some assistance.
Thank you in advance,

Hi Managers,
Thanks for the replies. I have followed Brenden
Gregg's advise not to use awk and make it simple (as
his email). His script covers multiple NIC cards and I
have inserted grep command to skip the virtual IPs.
Thanks to Brenden.
My script ended like this:
display_nic_parameter() {
###Nic parameters in Main ####
for nic in `netstat -i | grep -v ":[0-9]" | awk 'NR >=
3 { if ($1) print $1 }'`
do
    set -- `echo $nic | sed 's/\([0-9]*\)$/ \1/`
    type=$1
    num=$2
    echo "<h5>Interface Name: $nic </h5>"
    /usr/sbin/ndd -set /dev/$type instance $num
    for param in $nicparams
    do
      echo " $param: \c"
      ndd -get /dev/$type $param
    done
done
}

Hi Uman,
I've attached a script, perhaps this helps?
Sending variables into an awk script is indeed difficult! My solution was
to try a different approach...
no worries,

Hi
I'm mounting a drive from a solaris 8 server to a redhat server.
The mount is working, but all files are owned by "nobody4"
I can not find a place to change the uid or username as in redhat's mount.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Subject: scp leaves ssh processes running
Hello all. When I issue an scp command like this
/bin/scp ihgob00000170045_0001.arc
dana:/oradata/ihgob/archive/standby00000170045_0001.arc
which does its work well, I found that sometimes (over 50 %) a ssh
process is left running:
/usr/local/bin/ssh -x -oFallBackToRsh no dana scp -t
/oradata/ihgob/archive/standby00000170045_0001.arc
so I will end being out of processes someday if I don't kill them.
I've tested if from script, from cron, and from command line directly,
with the same efects.
SSH Version OpenSSH_2.2.0p1, protocol versions 1.5/2.0. Only protocol 2
activated.
SunOS frodo 5.6 Generic_105181-31 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise-10000
I've found some literature about ssh sessions hanging on exit, but I've
no access to this ssh process launched by the scp process, and with
parent id = 1 in ps. Any ideas?. Thank you.

Hi Guys,
I am trying to install sol. 9 but keep getting the following error:
Error: Could not open file /a/etc/vfstab
Could not create the file system mount table (/etc/vfstab)
Any ideas as to what might be causing this error? Bad Media, maybe? Any
suggestions would be grately appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Simran

Hi gurus,
I'm having a weird behavior of the date command... look at this,
 date
Mon Jan 31 13:35:21 GMT 2005
 date 0128113803
Tue Jan 28 11:38:00 GMT 2003
but.... I run again date and...
Mon Mar 28 11:38:38 GMT 2005 <--- 2005???? Mar?????
I also tried this on Single user mode, and it does the same thing.
Thank in advance

Subject: NIS, NIS+ or LDAP
Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 09:09:25 -0600
From: "Chris L. Anderson" <CA07@ridemetro.org>
To: <sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org>
Our UNIX environment is growing rapidly and I need to implement some
kind of information service. I was planning to use NIS but I am not
really comfortable with the access to the encrypted passwords. I have
tried to implement LDAP using both Sun's LDAP ( previously the iPlanet
LDAP server I believe ) and OpenLDAP with no success. I have heard
stories about NIS+ that basically say I should avoid it for reasons I
can't remember at this point.
Basically I would like to hear some suggestions from those who have been
down this route. So if you have any opinions on which is better I would
like to hear them. Also if you are using LDAP and prefer it ... please
let me know which version of LDAP you are using.
Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions,

Subject: fat-fingered directories (solaris 2.6

From: "Bruntel, Mitchell L, ALABS" <mbruntel@att.com>

Ok. I could have should have most absolutely should NOT have logged out of
this system, but it's down.
1) I was on as root, (but thought I was on as myself), and did a " chown -R
myself:staff * " on what I thought was my directory, but was unfortunately
root directory.
I interrupted the command when I realized, but too late.
i can no longer reliably log into the machine as root unless I go into init
S
(which I can seem to only do reliably when I am doing a boot cdrom)
I broke out of the boot cd, and entered single user fine.
did a fsck, and mounted old /root as /tmp/root, etc.
but wouldnt let me chown back.
Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
Thank heavens it's not a major machine for me.
thanks again
Oh. Solaris 2.6 on a Sparc 4200
