HSM

Managers,

This is a bit off topic but it might be of interest to Sun managers. We
are formulating a long term storage strategy of a Sun, Windows, and
Linux environment. The goal is to meet predicted storage requirements
while streamlining and improving performance of tape backups. We also
want to address disaster recovery with the storage strategy.

Part of our strategy is to implement a Hierachical Storage Management
system where infrequently accessed data is automatically migrated to 2nd
tier storage and eventually to tape. We plan to continue our normal
backup schedule for 1st tier storage but we won't backup the 2nd tier at
all because it should have been written to tape while on 1st tier. We
keep a monthly backup permanently.

We've looked into products from Enigma Data Systems, Legato and Veritas.

Do any of you have any experience with these vendor's HSM products or
any other HSM s/w vendors? What were the gotchas etc?

Thanks,

Vic Engle
