Solstice Disksuite need maintanence (Star Kitty)

From: hmnguyen@verizongni.com
Date: Tue Jan 28 2003 - 11:04:17 EST

Star;

I think the reason your system was unable to boot up in multi-user mode is
that Soltice did not had enough number of majority of database. Soltice
database rule of thump is it requires to have at leat 50% + 1. Your current
setup only had one copy of metadb on slice 7, thus "maintenance" message
was generated as a resulted. It is easy to remove metadb and recreate
them, just use couple command below:

#metadb -d c1t1d0s7 c1t2d0s7
#metadb -a -f -c3 c1t1d0s7
#metadb -a -f -c3 c1t2d0s7

Hope this solve your issue.

Cheers,
Hoang

Or alternately, as Christoph Lupe suggested:

-> No need to touch them. Put this in /etc/system:
->
-> set nfs:nfs_allow_preepoch_time = 0xffffffff

However, the official Sun docs state that the nfs:nfs_allow_preepoch_time
parameter should be treated as a boolean, set to either 1 or 0, even
though it's stored as a 32-bit value:

   http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/816-0607/6m735r5fe?a=view#indexterm-79

I'm guessing the 0xffffffff value either works because it's non-zero or
because its least significant bit is set.

Hi Sun Managers,

Please help me to solve a problem with my E250 display. If the monitor is
plugged in, system will come up to just right before the GUI being
displayed, and gives this error: The X-display cannot be started on display
:0..

The system then will lock up with yellow light flashing. The ok prompt
says: type go to resume, but the KB locks up too. I can only power off on
back on

If I unplug the monitor, system will come up and I can telnet to the
system.

Thank you in advance,

Their answers:
------------------------------------------------------------
SUNWsibi is a package that exists only in the miniroot.

You cannot install the patch on an ordinary system; it can
only be installed on the install server's miniroot:

        patchadd -R <installdir>/Tools/Boot 109318-28
------------------------------------------------------------
This patch is only relevant to a "miniroot" environment on a jumpstart
server, which should already have this package installed.

To apply the patch you'll need to do something like :
patchadd -R /jumpstart/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot 109318-28
(replace /jumpstart with the patch to your jumpstart server).

If you're not trying to patch a jumpstart server miniroot, then you
dont need this patch!

the netra halts. Does anyone know why this happens, if am not wrong it also
used to happen with the telnet program. Thanks

Dear Sun Managers,

I need your expertise and help on some Solstice
Disksuite problem.

I've a SunBlade 1000 with Solaris 8 running. After the
power outrage, my system is unable to boot up into
multi-user mode anymore. It always prompt me to fsck
the file system after I issue reboot. When I had
performed fsck on the file system and do a reboot
again, it does not allow me to bootup successfully and
ask me to fsck the file system again.

What could be wrong to the machine?

I do a control-D from single-user mode to go into the
multi-user mode. The metastat output shows status
"need maintanence" on the metadevice.

# metastat /dev/md/rdsk/d4;

>From metadb -i, how to tell how many replicas are
there? How to resolve this problem? Any pointers to
this problem would be highly appreciate.

Please provide me some useful website or documents so
that I can RTFM in future.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Disksuite 4.2.1 missing replicas
To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org

Hi,

Well, I did a really dumb thing. Sometime over the last few weeks, I've
managed to clobber the slices containing the Disksuite replica database
on my E3000.

Unfortunately, I didn't discover this until I had to replace an SSA
module this afternoon.

Is it safe, and will it work, if I recreate the replicas on another
disk(s), and just re-add the slices that contain the volumes into some
metadevices?

Or should I just give up and start the restore running now?

Thanks in advance,
Craig

My security software reported that the /etc/path_to_inst and
/etc/path_to_inst.old files changed on an old sparc5 running well-patched
Solaris 8. Sure enough, the timestamps on both files were changed.
However, no one with root access was logged on at the time, nothing was
going on in root's cron at the time, no patching was going on, and no
hardware was added or removed. Since both files are exactly the same
size and have the same contents, I cannot diff the old and the new file
to see what might have changed.

I am at a loss for why these two files might have changed. Can anyone
suggest a reason for a change in these files that I have missed? TIA,
and I will summarize.

I have checked/done the following:
1. Restarted the NFS daemons on server: wxyz
2. Restarted the NFS daemons on server: abcd
3. Changed the mount point permissions to '777'
4. If I run a showmount -e OR a dfshares on server wxyz the directories are

5. If on server abcd, and I run: dfshares wxyz I also see the directories

I am now out of idea's and urgently need some help please! Unfortunately I
