Max number of processes...

A customer of us is running a Progress database on a SUN E250 under
Solaris 8. Now it turns out to be, that the system runs out of forkable
processes (see the error below). I found a document on docs.sun.com
which gives an explanation about variables by which one can increase the
max. number of processes.
Unfortunately, the explanations were not very clear and a bit confusing.
As far as I can see it, the variable max_nprocs would fit best to this
issue. But so does pidmax! However, are there any side effects in
especially those two variables that can have bad influences to a system?
I had in mind to set mx_nprocs to the maximum and reboot the system...

>From DB log:
"SYSTEM ERROR: Too many subprocesses, cannot fork. Errno=. (358)" is
displayed.

TIA,
Peter Matzer
