Configuring imapd to use SSL (Solaris 8)

Hello managers,

I am trying to configure WU-IMAPD on Solaris 8 to use SSL, without
success so far. The docu says it is build with SSL by default which
indeed seems to be the case from the compiler output. I have Apache
successfully running with a self-signed certificate smartsoft.crt. I
copied this certificate to /usr/local/ssl/certs as shown in the docu and
renamed it to imapd.pem. I then SIGHUPed inetd and tryied o access the
imapd server from MacOSX Mail.app with SSL checked. I get

Jan 16 15:48:49 merkur imapd[10416]: [ID 781495 mail.alert] Unable to
load private key from /usr/local/ssl/certs/imapd.pem, host=jupiter
[192.168.1.5]

on the server and the client fails to fetch mail from the server. The
privileges of this file are

        -rw-r--r-- 1 root other 1074 Jan 16 15:45 imapd.pem

Okay, what am I missing? If you guess that I have no real idea of what
all this certificate, signature,.. stuff is all about than you guess
right. I invested a day to read work me trough a bunch of sites, FAQs,
etc. and hoped I were able to get this working the easy way like I got
Apache working with SSL, but I had no luck so far.

Any hints to an SSL newbie are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

    Andreas
