Solaris and Veritas Backup Exec 8.6

Good Morning.

I have a huge headache with backup and restore throughput on my network.
I have re-cabled to get the following scenario eliminating a good amount
of H/W to simplify:
Database Server: Sun E4500 with Solaris8
Backup server: Dell Optiplex GX400 with Windows 2000 Server
Backup software: Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 loaded on the backup server.
Backup H/W: Exabyte 430 connected via SCSI to backup server.

I am using a crossover cable to connect the database server with the
backup server. All interfaces are set to 100Mbps Full Duplex.

When I backup the backup server locally, my backup rate is 500MB/min and
my restore rate (local restore) is also 500MB/min. When I backup the
database server, I get about a 250MB/min backup rate and an 18MB/min
restore rate.

The rate for the database server is unacceptable and I cannot find what
is causing it to be so slow. I've messed with the block and buffer sizes
of the Exabyte drives. I've verified that all drivers and patches are up
to date for all systems. The fact that my throughput for a local
backup/restore of the backup server is 500MB/min tells me that it's not
a problem with the backup server (except maybe the NIC) or the Exabyte
H/W (should I not assume)? I'm guessing that it has something to do with
the Sun E4500, but I have no idea what it could be.

Also, on another network, I tried a restore from BE 8.6 to Solaris 8
(Sunfire 3800) on a gige backbone and we get the same restore rate of
18MB/min.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Even if you can let me know what your throughput rates for backup and
restore are as well as your configuration, I would greatly appreciate it
and it will help all of us benchmark our systems.

Thanks.
Bob
